Local conditions

Why standard porta potty worksdifferently in Savannah

St. Patrick's Day is the single largest portable sanitation deployment on the Georgia coast, and inventory across the Coastal Health District is committed months in advance. Requesting units in February for a March event is generally too late.

Historic District squares restrict where units may sit and how visible they can be; several squares have no adjacent truck standing space at all.

Permitting authority

Portable sanitation companies serving Savannah are permitted by Coastal Health District, the Health Authority for Chatham County within district 9-1.

Event permits

City of Savannah Office of Special Events, Film & Tourism handles special event permits inside city limits, including squares and forsyth park. Historic District squares carry additional placement and screening restrictions beyond the standard permit.

What Savannah venues run into

  • Salt air accelerates corrosion on hinges, latches, and pump hardware
  • Summer humidity is the highest of any major Georgia market, increasing odor-control demands
  • Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 and requires tie-down or removal plans
  • Sandy and marsh-adjacent ground needs load-spreading under heavier units

Georgia rule 511-3-6

What Georgia rule requires in Savannah

From Rules of the Georgia Department of Public Health, Chapter 511-3-6 — Portable Sanitation Contractors, quoted with citations.

Haulers need an annual Waste Removal and Disposal Permit

No person shall engage in the removal or disposal of the contents of a portable sanitation unit without having obtained a Waste Removal and Disposal Permit from the Health Authority for the county in which the business is based. The permit must be renewed annually, and shall be valid in every county throughout the State.

511-3-6-.03(2)

Why it matters: The permit is issued by the county where the company is based but is valid statewide — so an Atlanta-permitted hauler can legally service a job in Savannah. Ask for the permit, not for a local address.

Spillage liability falls on the property owner and event sponsor

The property owner and special event sponsor are responsible for all prohibited discharge and unapproved spillage of sewage associated with a portable sanitation unit. The property owner and special event sponsor must notify the portable sanitation company if any unit becomes unsanitary, unsafe, or causes a prohibited discharge.

511-3-6-.03(4)

Why it matters: Georgia assigns discharge liability to you, the site owner or sponsor — not only to the hauler. Documented service intervals are your evidence.

In Chatham County, the Health Authority issuing those permits is Coastal Health District. The state Environmental Health office can confirm a company’s standing at (404) 657-6534.

Frequently asked questions

Renting in Savannah: common questions

Why does porta potty rental cost more in Savannah than Atlanta?

Three reasons stack up on the coast: salt air accelerates corrosion on hinges, latches, and pump hardware, raising maintenance cost per unit; hurricane season from June through November requires tie-down or removal contingency; and tourism demand keeps utilisation high year-round. Savannah consistently prices above the Georgia baseline as a result.

Can I put a porta potty in a Savannah Historic District square?

Sometimes, but the squares carry additional placement and screening restrictions beyond the standard special event permit, and several have no adjacent truck standing space at all. Because Georgia rule requires units stay accessible for maintenance by truck, a square with no standing space may be unusable regardless of whether the permit allows placement.

What happens to porta potties during hurricane season in Savannah?

Units become wind-borne debris hazards, so coastal rentals need either a tie-down plan or a removal trigger written into the arrangement before the season, not during a watch. Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30. Agree in advance who calls the removal and who pays for the trip.

Who permits porta potty companies serving Savannah?

The Coastal Health District, which is the Health Authority for Chatham County and seven other coastal counties, with offices in Savannah and Brunswick. Note that the permit a company holds is issued by the county it is based in and is valid statewide, so a Savannah job can lawfully be served by a company permitted elsewhere in Georgia.

The Savannah problem we get asked about most

A pair of portable toilets positioned side by side at an outdoor site

Port-driven industrial construction around Garden City and Pooler runs large crews on open sites with straightforward truck access. Historic District renovation work is the opposite problem: narrow lanes, no lay-down space, and visual screening expectations.

What that changes about the order: Historic District squares restrict where units may sit and how visible they can be; several squares have no adjacent truck standing space at all. For standard porta potty specifically, Standard delivery windows run 1-3 business days statewide; same-day and next-day placement is common in metro Atlanta when requested before noon.

Salt air accelerates corrosion on hinges, latches, and pump hardware is the factor that most often changes a service schedule here. Georgia rule defines servicing as emptying the waste and cleaning the unit, and in Coastal Georgia conditions the honest answer is often that a weekly interval is the floor, not the target.

Verify any provider yourself: ask for their current Waste Removal and Disposal Permit, then confirm it with the state Environmental Health office at (404) 657-6534. The permit is issued annually by the county the company is based in and is valid statewide.

Why trust this quote

What you can check before you book

Published pricing, with sources

Every range on this site links to where it came from and carries a review date. If a quote lands outside the published range, ask why. That is the point of publishing it.

Certification we can point you to

How it works

What happens after you call

  1. 1

    Tell us the job

Unit type, the Savannah delivery address or cross streets, dates, and either your crew size or your peak crowd. That is enough to size the order against the Georgia tables.

  2. 2

We size it against the rule

Construction jobs go through OSHA Table 1 as Georgia adopts it. Events go through Table 2, including the sewered-toilet subtraction and the 25% alcohol adjustment.

  3. 3

We route it to a certified company

The job goes to a portable sanitation company holding a current Waste Removal and Disposal Permit recognised by Coastal Health District. That permit is issued by the county where the company is based and is valid statewide.

  4. 4

You get the quote in writing

Written quote within 24 hours of a weekday request, or a same-day callback when you call before 3pm Eastern. Quoted pricing is held for 14 days from the date issued. If the delivered price would differ from the quote, we tell you why before you commit.

  5. 5

    Delivery, service, pickup

Placement is confirmed against truck access, and on events against the rule that units stay accessible for maintenance by truck at all times. Service intervals are set before delivery, not after.
